Viola delphinantha Boiss.

Conservation status and threats

The species is PROTECTED in Bulgaria by the Biodiversity Act - it is prohibited to "picking, collecting, cutting, uprooting or any other manner of destruction of specimens in their natural range in the wild", as well as "possession, keeping, movement, transport, export, trade and offering for sale or exchange of specimens taken in the wild". These bans apply to "all stages of life of the plants"¹.

Listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria to the category "Critically Endangered"².

Description and identification

Subshrub with woody rhizome.

Stems 5–30 cm high, thin, erect, glabrous.

Leaves sessile, linear to lanceolate, glabrous, with one vein, entire.

Stipules like the leaves.

Flower stalks glabrous, erect or patent.

Flowers not fragrant, solitary, rounded or wide obovate.

Petals pink, upper spread and lightly curved backwards and sideways, lateral petals spread sideways and lightly curved down.

Lower petals indented at the apex, with 2.0–3.5 cm long, curved and downwardly deflect spur.

Fruit capsule.

Flowering May-July³.

Habitat

Inhabits limestone rocks, rocky crevices and stony places⁴.

Mt Slavyanka (Parilski Dol locality), 950–1700 m alt⁵.
