Conservation status and threats

The species is PROTECTED in Bulgaria by the Biodiversity Act - it is prohibited to "picking, collecting, cutting, uprooting or any other manner of destruction of specimens in their natural range in the wild", as well as "possession, keeping, movement, transport, export, trade and offering for sale or exchange of specimens taken in the wild". These bans apply to "all stages of life of the plants"1.


Description and identification

Perennial herbaceous plant.

Stems short, 2–4 cm long.

Leaves alternate; basal leaves arranged in a rosette, (5) 10–15 (25) mm long and 2–5 (6) mm wide, oblanceolate-spatulate or obovate, gradually acuminate at the base into 2–4 mm long, shortly hairy or glabrous petioles, entire or with 2–3 (5) shallow lobes in the upper part, without a cartilaginous margin, hairy along the margin and less commonly on the upper surface, sometimes glandular-hairy, glabrous beneath, green; stem leaves up to 5–7 (8) mm long and 1.5–2 (4) mm wide, glandular-hairy, few or absent, elongated-lanceolate, entire.

Flowers solitary or in pairs (rarely 3–5), at the stem tips.

Pedicels up to 10–12 mm long, up to twice the length of the capsule, glandular-hairy.

Sepals fused up to half their length into a more or less dense glandular tube, almost enveloping the ovary, free part 2.5–3.5 mm long and 1.5–2 mm wide, ovate, blunt, entire, sparsely glandular, green.

Petals 4–7 mm long and 2.5–3 mm wide, elongated obovate or spatulate, narrowed at the base into a claw, entire or slightly notched at the apex, white, greenish at the base, glabrous, equal in size, up to twice as long as the calyx.

Filaments thread-like, narrowly winged below; anthers yellow.

Capsule 4–5 mm long and 3–4.5 mm wide, ovate-globose, styles divergent.

Seeds 0.6–0.7 mm long, ovate, finely granulate, dark brown to brownish-black.

Flowering from June to August2.


Distribution in Bulgaria

Rila Mountain (on peaks: Josafitsa, Elenin, Ibar and Sedemte ezera (Seven Lakes), Northern Pirin Mountain (Razlozhki Suhodol, Kamenititsa, Bayovi Dupki, Vihren), between 2200 and 2900 meters above sea level3.
