Cydonia oblonga Mill.

Description and identification

Cydonia oblongais a small tree, 1.5-8 m high, or a shrub. The flowers are single, large (up to 65 mm in diameter). The calyx is composed of 5 leaflets, glandular serrated, remaining with the fruit. Petals also 5, 15-17 mm long, white or pink, with darker pink veins, obovate. Flowering April-May¹.

Distribution in Bulgaria

Cultivated in yards and gardens throughout the country, in mountainous areas up to 1400 m altitude, in places it has become wild².

General distribution

Native to Central and Northeast Asia³.
