Deschampsia caespitosa is a perennial herb that forms dense tufts. Stems 20-130 cm high, straight, smooth. Spikelets 3-5 mm long, with 2-3 flowers. Glumes violet, golden green or whitish, lanceolate, finely toothed, with a membranous upper part. Lemmas membranous, with a violet or rust-brown band towards the middle of its back. The awn of lower lemma straight or slightly bent, not exceeding its length1.
