PROTECTED species in Bulgaria.

Description and identification

Fritillaria orientalis is an herbaceous perennial plant. Stems 14-45 cm tall, erect. The upper leaves are opposite or 3 in a whorl. The perianth is broadly campanulate, dark red outside, with darker red checkered spots. Flowering April-May¹.

Habitat

It grows on mountain slopes, in thickets and forest meadows and pastures, on rocky and stony places, more often on calcareous terrain².

Distribution in Bulgaria

Grows between 800 and 1400 meters above sea level⁴. It was found by us in Slavyanka mountain at about 2000 meters above sea level⁵.

General distribution

Italy (Apennines, Southern Alps), Austria, much of the Balkan Peninsula (Croatia, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia), western parts of Ukraine, Moldova and the Caucasus⁴:
