Empetrum nigrum L.
The species is PROTECTED in Bulgaria by the Biodiversity Act - it is prohibited to "picking, collecting, cutting, uprooting or any other manner of destruction of specimens in their natural range in the wild", as well as "possession, keeping, movement, transport, export, trade and offering for sale or exchange of specimens taken in the wild". These bans apply to "all stages of life of the plants"1.
Listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria to the category "Endangered"2.

Empetrum nigrum is a shrub with short woody rhizome.
Stems procumbent to ascending, rarely exceeding 50 cm in length.
Leaves 3–7 × 1–2 mm, mostly elliptical to oblong-elliptical, 2–4 times as long as wide.
Flowers normally hermaphrodite, with stamens usually persistent in fruit.
Sepals and petals ca. 1.5 mm, oblong, greenish pink to reddish purple.
Stamens up to 5 mm, long-exserted.
Fruit 5 mm in diameter, black.
Flowering July-August.
Insect pollination.
Reproduction by seeds4.
Stony and rocky places in the subalpine belt of Pirin and Rila Mts. Often forms communities5.
