Conservation status and threats

The species is PROTECTED in Bulgaria by the Biodiversity Act - it is prohibited to "picking, collecting, cutting, uprooting or any other manner of destruction of specimens in their natural range in the wild", as well as "possession, keeping, movement, transport, export, trade and offering for sale or exchange of specimens taken in the wild". These bans apply to "all stages of life of the plants"¹.

Description and identification

Sempervivum ciliosum is an evergreen perennial herb, reaching a height of 15 cm during flowering. Flowers with 12-14 yellow (yellow-green) petals. Leaves with hairs 2 to 4 mm long. Flowering June-July².

Habitat

Rocks and stony places³.

Distribution in Bulgaria

It is found in the floristic regions: Slavyanka, Pirin (southern), Vitosha, Rila, Struma Valley, Western and Eastern Rhodopes and Strandzha⁵.

According to the cited source the Sempervivum ciliosum grows up to 1000 meters above sea level, but during our visit to Mount Slavyanka we found it growing abundantly at over 2100 meters above sea level on the slopes of Golyam Tsarev Peak⁶.
