Description and identification

Campanula scutellata is a annual hispid herbaceous plant, growing from 10 to 30 cm in height.

Stem dichotomously branched above or from the base.

Basal leaves oblong-lanceolate, entire, subacute, cuneate at the base, sessile; upper cauline similar but distinctly smaller.

Inflorescence lax, cymose.

Flowers with rather short, patent pedicels.

Corolla 15-25 mm, almost rotate, lilac-blue, twice as long as calyx.

Calyx-teeth triangular-lanceolate-acuminate, patent, much longer than the ovary.

Capsule obconical, with persistent, widened and elongated stellate-patent calyx-teeth at apex.

Flowering May-July1, 2.


Habitat

In dry grassy and rocky places, in bushes and meadows, on shallow, poorly developed soils, most often with a silicate rock substrate, in the plains, foothills and mountains, more often in the xerothermic oak belt in communities of Quercus cerris, Quercus pubescens, Carpinus orientalis, Paliurus spina-christi, Juniperus oxycedrus and others3. We found it in a community of Juniperus excelsa Juniperus excelsa4.
