Steptorhamphus tuberosus (Jack.) Grosh. Synonyms: Lactuca tuberosa Jacq.; Lactuca cretica Desf.

Conservation status and threats

NOT protected species in Bulgaria.

Description and identification

Herbaceous perennial glabrous plant, 10 to 70 cm tall. The leaves are fleshy, the basal ones are petiolate, the stem leaves are sessile (without petioles) with auricles. The beak of the fruits (achenes) are 2-3 times longer than achene body. The achene body is strongly flattened. Flowering May-July¹.

Distribution in Bulgaria

In the next floristic regions: The Black Sea coast, Stara Planina (Eastern), The Struma Valley, The Tundzha Hilly Plane, Sredna gora (Eastern), The Rhodopes (Eastern and Middle), Thracian Plane and The Pirin (Southern); up to 1000 m alt².

General distribution

In the countries: Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Northern Macedonia, Ukraine (Crimean Peninsula), Cyprus, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Libya, Russia (North Caucasus)³, Iraq, Iran and Oman⁴.
